Whoever stays until the end will tell the story. We did what we could. Remember us.
These parting words were written down by Dr. Mahmoud Abu Nujaila on a hospital whiteboard in Jabalia, Gaza, in 2024. They were able to reach us and remain with us thanks to the work of journalists in the Gaza strip.
From May 14 to July 18, 2024, the Croatian Journalists’ Association published illustrations on social media depicting media workers killed in Gaza. Among them are reporters, editors, videographers, secretaries, drivers – all professionals who create and maintain media through their work.
With this movement and the exhibitions that followed, we wanted to honor our colleagues killed during the genocide in Gaza, which is still ongoing. Since October 7th, 2023, at least 70,000 people have been killed in Gaza, including at least 230 journalists. “The Israeli occupation is committing one massacre after another on Palestinian journalists, trying to kill witnesses to the truth in an effort to obscure the truth and hide from the eyes of the world the voices and images of the massacre of the Palestinian people in all Palestinian territories, and especially in the Gaza Strip,” our colleagues from the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate write.
We continue to create yet more space for their voices, we remember those killed and the way they were killed. With this exhibition, we want to preserve everything that they lived for and that they witnessed and advocated for through their work – resistance to repression, censorship, occupation, apartheid, and genocide.
